In New York State, about 1 in 4 adults is clinically obese. In Erie County alone, an estimated 2,500 people die of cardiac disease every year. These are alarming figures which continue to rise despite public health interventions and education initiatives across the country.
Obesity, cardiac disease, and diabetes mellitus, which constitute most of the chronic disease burden in the U.S., are diseases of lifestyle that are preventable, through proper counseling and education.
Sprouts is an innovative strategy to improve clinical nutrition and preventive counseling in medical education. We hope to begin growing a vegetable garden at the University at Buffalo, and launching a campaign for nutritional awareness and lifestyle modification among medical students and future health professionals.
